In my shape experiments, I used Photoshop to put my pictures into some shapes, so it cut of part of the picture only showing the main picture. When doing this, your attention is focused on what is in the picture and the shape, this can make the image more interesting. 

 

I like these pictures because you can see what the image is and most of the picture is shown, even though they are in some oddly shaped frames.
